"This was a monumental moment for me, because I was just told by a lot of very important people that I’m not gonna get a record contract. We all wanted to make a record, and the best thing for us to do was to just go do that instead of wait for somebody to give us the money to do it. When we were all done with this record that cost $25,000—and, we produced it ourselves—we thought, ‘OK! Phew. We’re done.’ So, we sold everything we could out of the box at shows, and it just grew and grew and grew. We made a second demo, I remember—‘Meet Virginia’ was on it—and everybody kind-of went away at that point—like, ‘You know what? I’m not liking the direction that these guys are heading in.’ And, ‘Meet Virginia’ ends up being the first song on the record that sold us a million records."
